SLUG 2019 Chess championship was held on 5th, 6th and 7th September at university of Ruhuna with the participation of the 14 state universities of Sri Lanka. The battle of the brains went on filling the atmosphere with thrill, excitement and the ambition. Each competitor gave the best of themselves to the game, slashing the rivals with strategic and analytical movements throughout the chequered board.
SLUG 2019 Chess Championship came to an end today; the 7th of September. Men’s championship of the tournament was won by university of Peradeniya who handled their movements very carefully until the very end. University of Moratuwa became the 1st runners up while the University of Jayewardenepura became the 2nd runners up. Also the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th places went to the universities of Colombo, Jaffna, Sabaragamuwa, Ruhuna and Wayamba respectively. University of Colombo crowned as the Women’s champions of the tournament giving an outstanding challenge to the other teams. University of Moratuwa emerged as the 1st runners up while University of Ruhuna became the 2nd runners up of SLUG 2019 Chess Women’s Championship, each giving a tough battle to the other. There, the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th places were win by the Universities of Jayewardenepura, Kelaniya, Rajarata, Sabaragamuwa and Wayamba respectively.
It marked the conclusion of one of the SLUG events which put the players’ mind power to the test, instead of their physical fitness. Perabeats offer their heartiest congratulations to the kings and queens who succeeded in conquering the SLUG 2019 chess board and also to all the players who fought brilliantly.
