With the great expectation of exposing the university science community towards space, and offer affordable chances to develop their technological perceptions and knowledge, SEDS and MTT-S chapters of the University of Peradeniya in collaboration with ORION Space Pvt. Ltd, Bhaktapur, Nepal has organized a special project under the title of Pico Satellite and Ground Control.
As the first phase under this title, the initiative webinar was held on 16th May 2020 via zoom considering the prevailing Covid – 19 situation. Mr. Rakesh Chandra Prajapathi, the CEO of ORION Space has participated as the resource person. Also, as the second occasion there would be a workshop, which contains two steps as one can be identified as knowledge sharing webinar session and as well as the other one is a one-day hands workshop.
Though it is practical to gather knowledge seekers everywhere, limited participants may participate in the workshop due to the pandemic issue. This workshop offers technical sessions on launch opportunities and ground segment operations. By delivering new perspectives in microsatellite, applications, and several presentations dedicated to cube satellite missions may help to envision future satellite projects. When it comes to the Pico Satellite or Cube satellites, these satellites are being developed at educational institutions as well as Universities, which have spread all around the world. The term called “CubeSat” means a satellite smaller than other satellites. A Cubs sat, however, must conform to specific criteria that control factors such as the shape, size, and weight.
If it pays attention to the organizers of this project, SEDS and IEE MTT-S Chapters of the University of Peradeniya can be identified in one specific collaborative side.
SEDS means “Student for the Exploration and Development of Space”. It empowers young people to participate and make an impact in space exploration. Furthermore, it helps the university science community develop their technical and leadership skills by providing many opportunities to manage and participate in national projects as well as to attend conferences, publish their work and develop their professional network in order to help students become more effective in their present and future career industry, academia, government, and education.
Moreover, IEEE MTT-S stands for Microwave Theory and Techniques Society is a transnational Society, which promotes the advancement of microwave theory and its applications including RF, microwave, millimeter-wave, and terahertz technologies. For more than 60 years, the MTT-S has worked to advance the professional standing of its members and enhance the quality of life for all people through the development and application of microwave technology.
Also on the other hand ORION Space Pvt. Ltd, Nepal is the company, which works in the collaboration with the University of Peradeniya. It is a company that works in the development of satellites and currently, it is involved in the development of Nepal’s first Pico satellite. Usually, they provide training and workshops on Pico satellites, ground stations, and Can Satellites.
Becoming a partner of this Pico satellite workshop organized by the University of Peradeniya would yield many benefits to the community who has the passion for developing their technical knowledge in space and satellite technology.
