Sri Lanka University Games (SLUG) is considered the beau ideal of Olympics in the university sports arena and university of Ruhuna took the pride of hosting SLUG’19 where over 7000 sportsmen and women from 14 state universities of the country competed for the championships of over 22 events.
Wresting is a competition between two competitors who attempt to gain and maintain a superior position. It is a combat sport that involve grappling techniques such as clinch fighting, throws, take downs, joint locks, pins and other grappling holds. Wrestling techniques have been incorporated into martial arts as well as into military hand to hand systems. This sport can either be theatrical for entertainment or genuinely competitive.
Wrestling is one of the most exciting and fierce sports events in the SLUG calendar. Around 14 universities all over the country have participated for the tournament to battle for the wrestling championship in the men’s category. Around 75 wrestlers showed their colours in this year’s championship which was held at the Gymnasium of University or Ruhuna on 30th, 31st August and 1st of September.
In view of last year’s Wrestling results, Sabaragamuwa university of Sri Lanka won last year’s championship and University of Sri Jayewardenepura and University of Peradeniya won the 2nd and 3rd places respectively. As this year categories, the wrestlers were categorized into various weight categories such as 125 kg,97 kg, 92 kg, 86 kg,79 kg,7 kg,70 kg,65 kg,61 kg, and 57 kg. Wayamba University wrestlers made their home university proud by achieving gold medals in 125 kg,97 kg,92 kg,86 kg weight categories. J’pura wrestlers made proud their university proud, achieving gold medal in the 79 kg weight category. University of Moratuwa won the gold medal in the 86 kg weight category.
Overall, University of Sri Jayewardenepura continued to dominate the first place of the podium and University of Wayamba won the 2nd place and Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka was awarded the 3rd place respectively.
