SABARAGAMUWA WRESTLERS DETHRONE PERA FROM THEIR UNCONQUERED REALM AFTER 19 YEARS

Holding the title of being the oldest sport in known history, the roots of wrestling origin from the legends of Greek mythology that tells the tale of God Zeus defeating Cronus in a wrestling match for the possession of the universe at the beginning of time. Today, professional wrestling is considered one of the most controversial and entertaining industries in the world. Watching a well-built young man take a death-defying leap through a wooden table into another man’s prone body can be a thrilling experience. But, wrestling is a challenging test of mental toughness, physical strength, muscular coordination, speed, flexibility, confidence and agility which demands the ignition of a fire that drives the wrestlers towards an intense desire to win.

Young undergraduates all around the island who are possessed with the spirit of competition took part in the inter university games 2018 as well. The matches were held at the university of Sri Jayewardenepura gymnasium on 26th of August.

Under the weight category of 52kg, L.A.P.Sandaruwan from the university of Sri Jayewardenepura won the first place while the second place was secured by  G.G. Kavinda from university of Kelaniya. Two wrestlers shared the third place, namely H.D.D. Prabath from the University of Moratuwa and S.C. Jayasingha from the Sabaragamuwa University. Under the weight category of 57kg, K.W.H.R.B. Kapukotuwa from University of Sri Jayewardenepura made his way to the first place while E.D.S.T. Madushalitha from University of Moratuwa became the second. The third and fourth places were won by D.P.S.Y. Madushanka from University of Peradeniya and K.D.N.C. Bandara from the University of Kelaniya respectively.

Under the weight category of 61Kg, S.K.A.G.Ginisily of Sabaragamuwa University crowned as the first while H.R.N.Madumadhawa won the second place. M.L.D.Fernando from the University of Peradeniya and H.K.B.B. Monaravila from the University of Moratuwa shared the third place. B.M.D.C. Gunarathna from the Sabaragamuwa University won the first place under the weight category of 65kg. H.G.T.H.A.Bandara from the University of Colombo won the 2nd place. W.M.S.J. Kumara from the University Sri Jayewardenepura and K.H.N.Nishantha from the University of Kelaniya shared the 3rd place under the weight category of 65kg.  Sabaragamuwa University roared as the first place winner under the weight category of 70kg crowning the young wrestler Dissanayake as the winner. S.Avithraj from the Eastern University won the second place and two third places were shared by K.A.T.D.I.Kannangara from Wayamba University and H.P.K. Thilakarathna from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura.

Rathnayaka from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura made his way to the first place under the weight category of 74kg. The second place won by Bandara from the Sabaragamuwa University. Mihiran from the University of Peradeniya and Gunawardhana from the Eastern University won the 3rd place. The young wrestler Wickramarathna made University of Peradeniya proud crowning as the first place winner under the weight category of 86kg. Vasuka,Bandara and Tharaka were the wrestlers who won the second, third and fourth places in the above weight category. They were from University of Moratuwa, University of Kelaniya and Wayamba University respectively. Under the weight category of 97kg, L.S. de. Silva secured the first place while Wickramasingha from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura was placed the second. Jayasinha from the Wayamba University won the third place and the fourth place was won by Bandara from the Sabaragamuwa University.

University of Peradeniya shined with pride when N.V.M. Sampath crowned as the first place winner under the weight category of 125kg. A.S.K Perera from the Sabaragamuwa University, Senevirathna from the University of Colombo, Ameer from the Eastern University were the young wrestlers who won the second, third and fourth places under the weight category of 125kg.

Marking an epic milestone in the history of university Wrestling, Sabaragamuwa university became the champions defeating University of Peradeniya who enjoyed an unrivalled position as the unbeaten over 19 years, scoring outstanding 22 points and thus throwing University of Peradeniya out of the throne. University of Sri Jayewardenepura roared as the runners up accomplishing an excellent score of 19.5 points. University of Peradeniya had to take off the crown of being champions for 19 consecutive years and become satisfied with a score of 11.5 which brought them down to the third place.
