We do sports as a means of maintaining and developing physical activities and skills. It is an active participation most people engage in to have a healthier lifestyle and mind. An activity, both the players and the audience enjoy. The youth in state universities all around the country shows constant affirmation of the importance of sports apart from their studies with their flying colors and dexterous performances.

Sri Lanka University Games (SLUG) is one of the many events where young men and women from state universities in the country come together to display their best performances. Sri Lanka University Games (SLUG) is an inter-state university event organized for the students to show the skills they’ve mastered throughout their university years. It is a special event and one that is definitely looked forward to as it is held once in three years. SLUG is the foundation to a platform where sportsmen and sportswomen who are a part of the university youth in the country can bring out their surpassing forms not only in front of the country but the whole world bringing glory to their country and universities with honor and respect.

Sri Lanka university games is an event organized by the members of the Sri Lanka University Sports Council by strictly following the cultures and standards of the Olympic Games. It is fair to consider this as a University Olympic Games. Sportsmen and sportswomen from 14 state universities participate in this.

This festival of games dates back to 1980.  When it was founded by Mr. Lesley Handunge, an athlete who represented Sri Lanka twice at the Olympic Games. He is also a former director of Physical Education at the University of Peradeniya, with his initiative and guidance the first Sri Lankan University Games was held at the University of Peradeniya from 16th to 24th March 1980 with a participation of 6 universities. The organizing was also done by the University of Peradeniya. And both the overall Men and Women championships were won by the University of Peradeniya. The chance to host the games is given to a different university each year. University of Ruhuna has been given the chance to host the 13th SLUG this year, 2019 it will be held towards the end of August.

More than 5000 undergraduates have been given the chance to participate in 35 events including 22 sports. This renowned festival of games come in lessons teaching them the best qualities, team spirit and discipline.

The 12th SLUG was held at the Wayamba University in 2016 from 1-16 September where the overall Mens’ Championship was won by the University of Sri Jaywardanepura and the University of Colombo won the Womens’ championship. University of Sri Jayawardanapura managed to take the overall university championship home with 357.7 points.

The awaited 13th SLUG is to be held this year (2019) and it will be hosted by the University of Ruhuna. Over 1000 participants are training for their best performances and waiting with much anticipation until late August with a thirst for victory to make their universities proud.
